Two of the best schools right now at keeping info close to the vest are Washington State and Boston College. All of the candidate lists at these schools have been put together by media speculation. There are no confirmed legit candidates at either place. Here’s a quick look at some things we’ve been able to piece together…
Washington State – AD Bill Moos has been very tight-lipped about this search. We seem to get all of our information after the fact. It has been confirmed that Boise State head coach Leon Rice did interview for the job, but will instead an extension at Boise State. Much of the early speculation centered on former Oregon head coach Ernie Kent – he and WSU Moos worked together at Oregon, but if he is such a legit contender, why hasn’t Moos pulled the trigger? Other names being floated are New Mexico State head coach Marvin Menzies and North Dakota head coach Saul Phillips. I have no idea where this one is headed at this point – and anyone who does is just speculating.
Boston College – Another one where candidates are all speculative. Word on the street is that Eddie Fogler’s search firm is handling this search. If true (which it is), there will be no legit info out of this one. He keeps it as close to the vest as anyone. There are some pretty good reports that St. Bonaventure head coach (and BC alum) Mark Schmidt interviewed this week. Other than that, the Tommy Amaker talk seems to have died down – he is holding a press conference Monday at Harvard – a pretty good indication that he will not be heading to BC. Other names making the rounds are Towson head coach Pat Skerry (Fogler handled the search when he got Towson), Syracuse assistant Mike Hopkins, and Quinnipiac head coach Tom Moore. If I’m a betting man (and I am), the choice here could be someone who has not been mentioned.
