University at Buffalo Vice President and Director of Athletics Mark Alnutt has announced a contract extension for head men’s basketball coach Jim Whitesell, extending his contract through the 2025 season.
“We are excited about the future of our men’s basketball program under Jim Whitesell‘s leadership,” said Alnutt. “I am pleased with the trajectory of the program and I look forward to working with Jim for many years to come.”
Whitesell guided the Bulls to an appearance in the MAC Championship game this past season and a berth into the 2021 NIT Tournament, just the second time in school history that the Bulls have played in the National Invitation Tournament.
In two seasons at the helm of the Buffalo program, Whitesell has won 36 games, including guiding back-to-back MAC Defensive Players of the Year and the 2020 MAC Sixth Man of the Year.
“I am extremely grateful for the support and the confidence in me shown by Mark Alnutt and Dr. Tripathi,” said Whitesell. “We have a fantastic group of young men and I am honored to work with them each day. We have an outstanding group that has the chance to do something special and we can’t wait for the fans and student body to be back in the stands at Alumni Arena cheering us on. Finally, I’d like to thank my staff whose dedication and hard work has been paramount.”
Whitesell is beginning his third season as head coach and his seventh season overall with the UB basketball program, being part of the most success stretch in school history.
