Jason Whitney has been named the new head men’s basketball coach at SUNY Corning Community College.
Whitney, an Avon student-athlete and native, replaces Isaac Bushey who served as the Head Coach for the last 9 seasons. Bushey took over as the Red Barons women’s head basketball coach after the 2022-23 season. SUNY Corning men’s basketball finished as the Mid-State Athletic Conference runners-up with a 15-10 record and advanced to the NJCAA Region III DIII Elite 8 in 2022-23.
Whitney was an NJCAA and Region III DII student-athlete at Alfred State before becoming an assistant coach at Alfred State from 2016-2019 and then again in 2021-2022. He also has experience coaching at the high school level with Hornell HS as well as college and development camp coaching experience.
Coach Whitney had this to say about taking over the men’s basketball program “I am thrilled and honored for the opportunity to take over a successful program that previous coach and Athletic Director, Isaac Bushey, built during his tenure. I’d like to thank the entire hiring committee for believing in me, and my coaching mentors, Jerry Jusianiec, Kirk Scholes, and Rob deGrandpre for giving me the opportunity to learn and prepare me for this position. “
“We will build upon an already successful program and culture in which we will reinforce the values of hard work, resilience, family and commitment – both in the classroom and community as well as on the basketball court. I’m thrilled to get started, and will bring an exciting style of basketball that will make the SUNY Corning Community College family and community both proud and excited to watch.” Said Coach Whitney
Of the hiring, SUNY Corning Director of Athletics Isaac Bushey said, “Jason truly loves the game of basketball and everything that goes into being a coach at the collegiate level. However, what was most impressive was his passion for higher ed and how he will make a difference in the lives of his athletes through lessons learned on and off the court. Jason also brings with him great recruiting connections, which will be key to building his program.”
Coach Whitney will serve the Red Barons campus community as a full-time admissions and recruitment staff member and he is just the fifth men’s basketball coach at SUNY Corning Community College in the past 54 years.
