William West Named Prince George’s Community College Interim Men’s Basketball Head Coach

Prince George’s Community College Athletics Director Jo Ann Rogers Todaro has announced that William West has been elevated to the post of interim men’s basketball head coach.

West, who takes over the men’s basketball program from Brian Johnson after Johnson was named the head coach at NCAA Division III Southern Vermont College, served as an assistant coach for the last two seasons at Prince George’s Community College. The Owls won the Maryland Junior College Athletic Conference (MD JUCO) Men’s Basketball Tournament in 2016-17 and advanced to the National Junior College Athletic Conference (NJCAA) Region XX Division III Men’s Basketball Championship Game in both seasons while the 2017-18 team also participated in the NJCAA District VII Championship Game. In the last two campaigns, the squad went 38-27 overall and 15-13 in league play.

“It is an honor and privilege to be named interim men’s basketball Coach at Prince Georges Community College,” said West. “I would like to thank Athletic Director Jo Ann Rogers Todaro for believing in my abilities to lead this program. I would also like to thank Brian Johnson for preparing me over the last two years for this moment. I am committed to continuing to build on the successful foundation Prince George’s Community College has produced throughout the years.”

Responsible for the player development for the guards at Prince George’s, West has coached six players that has received All-MD JUCO and All-NJCAA Region XX recognition along with one NJCAA Division III Honorable Mention All-American. He has assisted with four players continuing their careers at the NCAA Division II level, two players to NCAA Division III and one NAIA Division I. In addition, he aided with study hall that led the team to post a grade-point average of 3.24 and four players have graduated with their Associates Degree from Prince George’s Community College.

Prior to coming to Largo, West was the Friendship Tech Prep High School boy’s varsity head coach for the 2014-15 season, leading the team to a league-best 20-4 record. He was named the Coach of the Year by the league after guiding the squad to a division title as a first-year program. West also served as the boy’s junior varsity head coach at Laurel Senior High School from 2011-14 that included leading the team to consecutive winning seasons for the first time since 2005-06.

From 2003-05 West was the men’s head coach for Yokosuka Pro Traveling Team in Japan. The team toured the country and played various professional and semi-professional teams.

West served as an assistant coach for Team Sol in girl’s basketball for one season and two years as the McKinley Technology High School. He was tabbed as a “Coach on the Rise” while leading McKinley to consecutive playoff appearances for the first time in over 10 years.

West received his Associates Degree from the University of Maryland University College Asia and his Bachelor’s Degree at the University of District of Columbia. He is currently working on his Master of Arts in Political Science & History with a fall 2019 completion date.
