“In the case of hiring Andre, he’s well-known in the recruiting circles in North Carolina and he’s had success and has worked at quality programs,” Wilhelmi said.
Gray, 40, spent time at Wingate, Gardner-Webb, Western Carolina and, for the last two seasons, at UNC Wilmington. Before his stint at UNC Wilmington he worked under Coach Larry Hunter for three seasons at Western Carolina.
He is from Elizabethtown and is a graduate of East Bladen High School. After high school, he first went to Fayetteville State before transferring to Methodist, where he helped the Monarchs reach the Elite Eight of the Division II tournament.
“He actually has some experience in the CIAA having started is playing career at Fayetteville State,” Wilhelmi said. “So we’re excited about having him on our staff.”
Griffith, 25, is a Winston-Salem native who is a 2008 graduate of Mount Tabor. He is a graduate of N.C. Wesleyan and worked as an assistant at Mount Olive the last two seasons.
“I know all about the tradition of Winston-Salem State and how it all started with Coach (Big House) Gaines,” said Griffith, who helped N.C. Wesleyan to two conference championships during his playing career. “I just want to help continue that tradition by working hard in every aspect of the job.”
Wilhelmi said he got to know Griffith two seasons ago, when Griffith applied for an opening at WSSU.
“He was just out of college then but now he’s got a couple of years of experience and he’ll really make a difference as far as community involvement is concerned,” Wilhelmi said. “He really knows Winston-Salem and the surrounding area, and that’s a big plus.”
Wilhelmi said that now that he has his assistants in place, the next step is putting the finishing touches on this season’s schedule.
“We’re still waiting on a couple of things before we finalize the schedule,” he said, “but we are excited to have Andre and Justin in our program.”
