William Jewel College men’s basketball coach Larry Holley won his 850th game as a head college basketball coach last week at Saint Joseph’s College. He breaks down his current place in college basketball history:
"To the best of my knowledge here is where I stood at the end of the 2012-13 season……I’d have to look at every active coach’s current record to be sure exactly where I stand now but I believe the following to be correct:
"My 844 wins at the beginning of this year ranked me (I’m pretty sure the rankings have not changed) – (when listing coaches who have coached at more than one school I listed only the school they coached at last):
"#1 in the state of Missouri among all 4-year college coaches (NCAA I, II, III, NAIA I, II, NCCAA I, II) – active and all-time (Norm Stewart (retired) – U. of Missouri – is #2 on both lists).
"#3 among all NCAA Division II coaches – active and all-time (this list does not include Harry Statham at McKendree and will not for another year. When he is eligible to be listed as a DII coach he’ll be #1 and I’ll drop to #3 – he has over 1000 wins) – I trail only Herb Magee the Head Coach at the University of Philadelphia (971) and Don Meyer, now retired.
"#5 among all active NCAA coaches at all levels (I, II & III) – behind only Mike Krzyzewski – Duke – D1 (969), Herb Magee – Philadelphia – DII (971), Jim Boeheim – Syracuse DI (933) and Glenn Robinson, Franklin & Marshall – DIII (853).
"#10 among NCAA Division I, II & III coaches All-Time – behind only the four listed above plus Don Meyer (retired) – Northern State, SD – DII (923), Bob Knight (retired) – Texas Tech – DI (902), Dean Smith (retired) – North Carolina – DI (879), Adolph Rupp (retired – deceased) – Kentucky – DI (876) and Jim Calhoun (retired) – Connecticut – DI (873).
"#13 among all NCAA I, II & III coaches and all NAIA I & II coaches All-Time – behind only the 9 mentioned above plus Harry Statham – McKendree, IL – formerly NAIA I now NCAA DII (1074), Danny Miles – Oregon Tech – NAIA II (998) and Dave Holmquist – Biola, CA – NAIA I (853)."
