Wofford promotes Murphy to Associate Head Basketball Coach

Wofford head men’s basketball coach Dwight Perry announced the promotion of Will Murphy to associate head coach. Murphy enters his seventh year with the Terriers in the 2023-24 season.

“We are excited to announce the promotion of Will to associate head coach,” said Perry. “Will has been an integral part of the success at Wofford since he first arrived. He has made a significant impact in all areas of our program. From recruiting and player development to relationships in and around the community, his impact has been invaluable. Wofford is very lucky to have him and his wife, Pearson, in our program.”

Murphy joined the staff as director of basketball operations on June 16, 2017 and was elevated to assistant coach in October 2017.

Last season the Terriers were 17-16 overall, marking the sixth-straight season the team posted a winning record. B.J. Mack was named All-Southern Conference following the season, which saw the team upset the #3 seed UNCG Spartans in the quarterfinals of the SoCon Tournament to advance to the semifinals.

The 2021-22 season saw a 19-win campaign with a 19-13 overall clip and a 10-8 league record. The Terriers reached the semifinals of the Southern Conference Tournament and were selected for a postseason tournament. Despite a 2020-21 season that was marred by the COVID-19 pandemic, Wofford finished just a half game out of first place in the league with a 12-5 record. The 2019-20 campaign saw Wofford achieve 19 victories, highlighted by a 68-64 win at No. 17 North Carolina, the program’s second win over an AP Top 25 squad, and a remarkable run to the Southern Conference Championship Game.

After the completion of the 2019-20 season, Murphy was named to the NABC Under Armour 30 Under 30 list which highlighted the top 30 coaches in men’s basketball under the age of 30.

During the 2018-19 season the Terriers posted a 30-5 overall record, including a perfect 18-0 mark in Southern Conference play. They won the Southern Conference Tournament title. In the NCAA Tournament, the Terriers were a seventh-seed and a win over Seton Hall sent Wofford to the second round, the league’s first NCAA Tournament victory in 11 years.

The team was ranked in the Associated Press Top 25 for the first time ever, ending the season at #19. They were also ranked #18 in the final USA Today Coaches Poll. Fletcher Magee was named Southern Conference Player of the Year, along with honorable mention All-America recognition and Lou Henson National Player of the Year recipient as the top mid-major player in Division I. Cameron Jackson joined Magee on the first team All-Southern Conference team by both the media and coaches.

In his first season in 2017-18, Murphy primarily helped with the guards. Fletcher Magee (SoCon Player of the Year by the media and First-Team All-SoCon) and Storm Murphy (All-Freshman Team) took home conference honors as Wofford finished 21-13. He also handled all travel logistics and prepared scouting reports on opponents.

Before joining the Terriers, Murphy spent the previous season as the director of player development for Wake Forest. Prior to that role, Murphy spent three seasons in Winston-Salem as the video coordinator and the director of technology and scouting for the Demon Deacons.

Murphy started his career at Wake Forest as a student manager before joining the active roster as a walk-on guard.

He graduated from Wake Forest in May of 2013 with a degree in mathematical business. Murphy is a native of Murfreesboro, Tennessee. He and his wife, Pearson Lien, were married in the summer of 2020.
