Zach Hurth named assistant men’s basketball coach at Ohio Northern

Zach Hurth has been named an assistant men’s basketball coach at Ohio Northern University.

He comes to ONU after a one-year stint as an assistant coach at Trine (ind.) in 2018-19.

“We are very excited to have Zach on our staff,” ONU head coach Rich Bensman said. “Zach’s energy and enthusiasm are contagious. We had an outstanding pool of applicants and and feel very fortunate to have him at Ohio Northern.”

A native of Lansing, Mich., Hurth attended Albion (Mich.) in 2011-15 where he was a four-year varsity player for the Britons.

Hurth was named captain of the team his junior and senior year. He finished his senior season seventh in the conference in made three-pointers and second in three-point percentage (42.5%). He ranks in the top-ten all-time at Albion in minutes played and started 58 games during his career.

After college, Hurth worked as the assistant coach for the men’s basketball program at the University of Michigan-Dearborn where he was the head of scouting and recruiting.

In 2016, he became the graduate assistant coach at Aquinas College in Grand Rapids, Mich. While working towards a master’s degree in business management with a focus in leadership, he was involved in player development, recruiting, practice planning, and film/scouting activities.

During his time at Aquinas, Hurth helped coach and developed two All-Americans.

The Aquinas men’s basketball team reached the NAIA national tournament during the 2016-17 season.
