D2 DIRT: Former D1 Head Coach set to take over at Fort Valley State

Story: Adam Nelson (@HD_DirtKing)

I can confirm that D2 Fort Valley State (GA) will name Montez Robinson as their new Head Men’s Basketball Coach. Robinson will replace Mark Sherrill, the former coach who the school parted ways with back in mid-December, after 3+ seasons on the job.

Robinson spent last season as the interim head coach at the University of Tennessee Martin. He took over there in November 2020 after the sudden passing of head coach Anthony Stewart, and navigated the Skyhawks through a difficult period.

Prior to his time at UTM, Robinson served as the head coach at Alcorn State (2015-20) where he went 69-86 (.445). In 2016-17, he was tabbed as the SWAC Coach of the Year, after guiding his squad to an 18-win season.

The veteran coach also worked as an assistant at Bethune-Cookman (2011-15), and Kennesaw State (2005-11). He began his coaching career back in 2002 as an assistant at NAIA Truett-McConnell College.

An official announcement is expected shortly.
