Furbush becomes winningest coach in Bates MBB history

Junior captain Stephon Baxter scored a game-high 31 points and Jon Furbush ’05 became the winningest coach in Bates men’s basketball history as the Bobcats defeated the University of Maine at Farmington 87-81 Monday night.

Furbush earned his 159th career win, breaking the record previously held by Bobcat great George Wigton. In his 13th year at the helm of the program, Furbush has led the team to eight appearances in the NESCAC tournament, three appearances in the NESCAC semifinals, and most notably, the 2015 NCAA Division III Tournament Sweet 16.

Furbush was named the new men’s basketball coach at Bates after the 2007-08 season, succeeding his former coach, Joe Reilly. Furbush, a 2005 Bates graduate and native of South Portland, Maine, became the college’s 21st head men’s basketball coach.

Furbush was an assistant men’s basketball coach at Springfield College in 2007-08 and held the same position for two seasons at Bates after graduating with a degree in American cultural studies. Furbush has a masters degree in Athletic Administration and Coaching from Concordia University Irvine.
