A busy week, and getting busier. Here are a few things to kick off the day…
Very, very early still at Omaha, but one name making the rounds is Creighton assistant Alan Huss. The Creighton alum has been on the Blue Jays staff since 2017, and was also an assistant at New Mexico. More names here soon.
UConn associate head coach Kimani Young’s name is picking up steam at UMass. He has been on Danny Hurley’s staff since 2018, and had been with Richard Pitino at Minnesota and FIU before that. The NYC native is known for his strong NY recruiting ties. Mark Blaudschun reporting this could be done in a few days.
Georgetown’s Patrick Ewing was given a vote of confidence by AD Lee Reed last week despite being winless in the Big East this season and 6-24 overall. Now, more info is coming out on the “secret” extension that Ewing signed after last season. According to a report from Hilltop Hoops, Georgetown added three-years to Ewing’s contract last spring, which means he now has four years left. Ewing’s $3MM+/yr base salary remained unchanged with the extension.
Glenn Sugiyama from DHR has the Western Michigan search. Obviously the name everyone wants to talk about here is Michigan assistant Saddi Washington. The WMU alum has been at Michigan since 2016, and was reportedly involved the last time it opened in 2020. Biggest question here will be salary – does Western Michigan have the money to make this a competitive spot? Former head coach Clayton Bates was making $220k/yr, while his predecessor Steve Hawkins was at $385k/yr. Will be interesting to see how this plays out.
Speaking of Western Michigan + Hawkins, I have heard the former WMU head coach is in the mix at D2 Quincy University. It sounds like he interviewed over the weekend, and is one of four finalists. Hawkins had previously served as the head coach at QU (1991-00). I’ve also heard that Parkland College head coach Anthony Figueroa has interviewed, and one other JUCO head coach from the area was also on campus. The last on-campus interview is today, with a decision expected shortly after that.
Interesting name that I’ve heard multiple times at D2 Pittsburg State (KS) is Missouri Southern head coach Jeff Boschee. The former standout at Kansas has been the HC at Missouri Southern for the past eight seasons where he has had tremendous success. Pitt State is looking to replace Kim Anderson, who retired at few weeks ago. More on this one as I hear it.
Sounds like a very good D1 JUCO in Texas just opened. Working on this one today and will have more soon. **UPDATE: Confirmed HERE.**
A lot of movement at the D2 level yesterday – expect more today. Some really good jobs open there right now, with more coming…
