Northern Colorado Men’s Basketball assistant coach Cory Fehringer has been promoted to Associate Head Coach and Director of Performance by Head Coach Steve Smiley.
“I’m really proud of Coach Fehringer and excited for him with this well-deserved promotion,” said Smiley. “Coach Fehringer has been a huge piece of our team’s success and our transition these past two years during a difficult time with the pandemic and all of the complications that entailed. Coach Fehringer is passionate about our players’ development and our team’s success, and there is no place that he would rather be than working with our guys on and off the court.
“He has the right values, he’s a family-first coach and a great dad to his kids, which is really important to me and he’s a great role model for our student-athletes. All in all, Coach Fehringer is a huge piece of our team’s success here at Northern Colorado.”
Fehringer works primarily with the program’s guards and wings and joined the staff in 2020. He is also an integral part of putting together the team’s recruiting classes.
He helped Daylen Kountz earn unanimous first-team All-Big Sky honors in 2021-22 along with Matt Johnson II making the third team in 2020-21 and 21-22. He also was key in the development of Bodie Hume who earned third-team all-conference honors in 2021-22.
Kountz averaged the 10th most points in the NCAA in 2021-22 at 21.2 points per game to help him earn All-District selections by the USBWA and NABC.
Northern Colorado has been the best three-point shooting team in the Big Sky the past two seasons with Fehringer on staff, averaging 9.0 per contest in 2020-21 and 10.2 in 2021-22. Dru Kuxhausen led the Big Sky and ranked in the top 10 nationally with 112 made threes in 2021-22.
Fehringer helped the Bears advance to the Big Sky championship game in 2022 and the semifinals of the College Basketball Invitational.
The Sterling, Colorado native came to UNC after spending the previous four at Western Nebraska Community College as the head coach.
