Following up on something that I first mentioned back on 5/12 (D3 DIRT). Colgate assistant Dave Klatsky as officially been named as the new Head Men’s Basketball Coach at D3 NYU. Here’s the official release from the school:
New York University Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs and Director of Athletics Stuart Robinson has named Dave Klatsky as the 15th head coach in men’s basketball program history.
“Out of an incredibly deep and diverse pool of candidates, Dave consistently rose in our conversations as somebody who had that balance between a highly academic and achieving institution, success at each of the levels that he’s ever been involved with and just an overall energy and commitment to the student-athlete experience,” Robinson said. “Out of a pool of three incredibly impressive finalists, Dave stood out because of that combination. He never wavered from those beliefs, never wavered in terms of his commitment and his drive, and looking at where our program is today and where we want it to go, he was just the right person at the right time to start this new chapter.”
Klatsky comes to NYU after an 11-year tenure as an assistant coach at Division I Colgate University, helping lead the program to three of the last four Patriot League Tournament titles. The Holmdel, NJ, native played for storied coach Fran Dunphy at the University of Pennsylvania from 1999-2003, setting the program’s then-single-season assist record in 2000-01.
“Dave was a pleasure to coach at Penn and has developed into a thoughtful and intelligent leader,” Dunphy said. “He’s done great work at Colgate and has always wanted this opportunity. I’m thrilled that he will have his chance at as prestigious an institution as NYU.”
At Colgate, under three-time Patriot League Coach of the Year Matt Langel, Klatsky had numerous responsibilities including scouting, practice and game planning, recruiting and analyzing advanced statistics. He was the primary recruiter of four All-League selections and two Defensive Players of the Year while directing Colgate’s Elite Prospect Camp.
“David is a terrific basketball coach. Having been an outstanding point guard, he sees and understands the game at a high level,” said Langel. “With his experiences academically at Penn and professionally on Wall Street, he also has a uniquely deep understanding of what student-athletes are going through and where they’re headed. His ability to positively impact young people’s lives is significant.
“More important than anything, David models the character and behavior we all want for our student-athletes—a man committed to being the best husband, father and friend he can be. Colgate and Hamilton, NY, will miss him dearly and NYU is extremely lucky to have him.”
The Raiders’ three Patriot League Tournament titles (2019, ’21, ’22) were their first since 1996 and they’ve won the last four regular season championships. Klatsky helped grow the program from eight wins in his first season to an all-time best 25 victories in 2019-20. His extensive player development resulted in 10 All-League honorees over the past six seasons.

Prior to Colgate, Klatsky served as an assistant coach at Stevens Institute of Technology from 2007-11. While there he played a key role in all facets of the program, helping guide the Ducks to their first two ECAC Metro Championships ever (2008, ’11). Upon graduation from Penn, Klatsky worked as an equity analyst and trader in Manhattan and Jersey City, now making a return to the New York metropolitan area.
Klatsky earned a Bachelor of Science degree in economics with a concentration in finance and accounting from Penn in 2003.
He is also the creator of StatChat, a podcast centered around how different programs utilize advanced statistics, and mentored a Colgate student in developing a startup that analyzes shot quality in basketball.
Klatsky becomes the 15th head coach, and fourth since moving to Division III, in the 104-year history of men’s basketball at NYU.
