The Penn ties continue for Colgate University Head Men’s Basketball Coach Matt Langel, who announced the addition of Trey Montgomery to the staff as an assistant coach.
Montgomery served the past four years as an assistant coach at Penn, where he helped lead the Quakers to 47 total wins and 24 conference victories. During his time in Philadelphia, Montgomery aided in the development of six All-Ivy League honorees and one Co-Player of the Year.
“I would first like to thank Coach Donahue and the Penn Basketball program for the opportunity to represent such a fine program and institution,” Montgomery said. “I am extremely thankful to Coach Langel and Colgate University’s administration for the opportunity. I am honored and grateful to work at a great university and I can’t wait to do all that I can to impact success on and off the court.”
Penn finished the 2021-22 season with 12 wins and a 9-5 conference mark. The Quakers posted a five-game winning streak during the Ivy League regular season, which included two wins over Harvard and a triumph over league champion Yale.
In his first season in 2018-19, Penn went 4-0 during Philadelphia Big 5 play, including a win over defending NCAA champion Villanova. It was the Quakers’ first unbeaten Big 5 campaign since 2001-02 and just the second since 1973-74.
“Trey’s passion for the game of basketball and for serving young people and a community became crystal clear in our search process for new assistant coaches,” Langel said. “Combined with his playing successes as a student-athlete and a professional, Coach Montgomery’s reputation as a coach skilled in player development will help him fit into our Colgate Basketball culture. We are thrilled to welcome Trey, Kala, Traycen and Klay to Hamilton.”
Prior to his time at Penn, Montgomery spent two seasons as an assistant men’s basketball coach at Eastern University in nearby St. Davids, Pa. Prior to that, he spent four years as an assistant coach at Destrehan (La.) High School and coached the U-14 AAU Louisiana Legends team.
Montgomery played college basketball at Division I Samford University in Birmingham, Ala., where he was a four-year letter winner and two-year captain. He finished his career with 1,030 career points (19th in program history) and more than 350 rebounds, 200 assists and 100 steals. He made 112 appearances including 88 consecutive starts to end his career.
Montgomery was a two-time recipient of the program’s Kevy McInnis Award, given annually to the player who best exemplifies leadership both on and off the court, possesses the desire to achieve, and devotes his time to both church and community service. He also was a two-time recipient of Samford basketball’s Practice Hard Award and received the program’s Rebound and Assist Awards during his career.
Off the court, Montgomery was one of two campus-wide recipients of Samford University’s John C. Pittman Spirit Accolade in 2009-10. The annual award recognizes a graduating senior who has exhibited serious commitment to being a student, honoring Christ, maintaining personal health, and involvement in student life.
Following graduation, Montgomery had a brief training camp stint with the Albuquerque Thunderbirds in the NBA D-League. He also spent two seasons overseas in Germany for the VfB1900 Giessen Pointers and played two seasons in the ABA as a member of the Jackson Showboats.
Montgomery is a native of St. Rose, La., a town about 20 minutes west of New Orleans. He will be moving from the Philadelphia area and will reside in Hamilton with his wife, Kala, and their two sons, Traycen (7) and Klay (4).
