Oklahoma head men’s basketball coach Porter Moser announced the addition of Matt Brady to his staff as an assistant coach.
“Matt is a high-level coach and teacher that brings a wealth of experience,” said Moser. “He has been a head coach that led his team to the NCAA Tournament, recruited at the highest level at Maryland and is an outstanding on-floor coach. Matt is a grinder in recruiting and brings a ton of experience on the recruiting trail.”
Brady brings 30-plus years of coaching experience at the NCAA Division I level to Norman and spent 12 years as head coach at Marist (2004-08) and James Madison (2008-16).
“I feel incredibly blessed to join such a committed group of student-athletes and coaches,” said Brady. “I share coach Moser’s vision and our goal of getting to the top of the Big 12 and winning championships. In the short time I have been in Norman, the entire program of coaches, support staff and players believe in Coach Moser and the direction this program is headed. Truly an honor to work at the University of Oklahoma and represent OU.”
Brady spent the last four seasons at Maryland as an assistant coach. He was elevated to an assistant coach by Mark Turgeon in 2018 and previously served as the director of player personnel for one season.
During his time in College Park, Brady aided Maryland to two NCAA Tournaments and the 2020 Big Ten Championship.
During the 2020-21 slate, Maryland advanced to the NCAA Tournament round of 32. Brady helped guards Aarron Wiggins, Eric Ayala and Darryl Morsell earn All-Big Ten honors and Morsell was also named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year. Wiggins was selected by the Oklahoma City Thunder in the second round of the 2021 draft.
In his second year as an assistant coach with the Terrapins, Brady helped Maryland to the 2020 Big Ten Championship and a 24-7 record. Brady was instrumental in the development of All-Big Ten First Team honorees Anthony Cowan Jr., and Jalen Smith. Smith was a unanimous All-American and a top-10 NBA draft pick. Maryland finished the season ranked No. 12 in the final AP poll.
In his first year on the sidelines under Turgeon, Brady aided the Terps to the second round of the 2019 NCAA Tournament.
Brady served as an assistant coach at La Salle for one season after an eight-year run as James Madison head coach. He earned 139 wins with the Dukes and tallied four seasons with 20-plus victories.
In 2013, he led JMU to the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Championship and the NCAA Tournament. Brady was named National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) District 10 Co-Coach of the Year for his work with the Dukes in 2013.
Brady led James Madison to three additional postseason appearances and the 2015 CAA regular season title.
Prior to Brady’s time with the Dukes, James Madison finished last in the conference in scoring, field goal and three-point percentage in 2007. Brady reversed the Dukes’ woes and led JMU atop the conference in all three categories in his first season. Brady coached 10 All-CAA Players, four all-district honorees and mentored three of the top-10 scorers in program history.
Prior to his time at JMU, Brady led Marist for four seasons and compiled a 73-60 record. Brady guided the Red Foxes to the 2007 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) regular season title and compiled a 25-9 overall record and a 14-4 mark in conference play. Marist advanced to the NIT second round in 2007.
Brady mentored 2007 MAAC Player of the Year Jared Jordan, who was a two-time NCAA Division I assist leader. Jordan was selected with the 45th pick in the 2007 NBA Draft by the Los Angeles Clippers.
A 1987 Siena graduate, Brady was a Division I assistant coach for 17 seasons at Rhode Island (1987-89), Wagner (1989-93) and Saint Joseph’s (1993-04).
At Saint Joseph, Brady aided the Hawks to four NCAA Tournament appearances, three NIT appearances, four Big 5 championships and three Atlantic 10 titles.
Saint Joseph started the 2003-04 season 27-0 and was ranked No. 1 in the nation. The Hawks were selected as a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament and advanced to the Elite Eight.
Brady was involved in the recruitment of several top players in Saint Joseph’s history, including 2004 National Player of the Year Jameer Nelson and honorable mention AP All-America honoree Delonte West. Nelson, who played 12 season in the NBA and was selected in the first round of the 2004 NBA Draft, was mentored and trained by Brady during the NBA offseason.
As a player at Sienna, Brady appeared in 114 career games and earned 92 starts. He finished his career as the all-time assists leader (593) and was inducted into the school’s hall of fame in 1993. Brady finished his illustrious career with 1,106 points (9.7 PPG) and shot 45.9 percent from the field.
Brady attended Paul VI High School in Haddon (N.J.) Township and is a native of Haddon Heights, N.J. He was named to the 1980s South Jersey All-Decade Team and was inducted in the Camden County Sports Hall of Fame in 2012.
Brady and his wife Mary have three sons – Logan, Cole and Griffin.
