Jonathan Jones joined the Pacific men’s basketball staff in September 2023 as an assistant coach.
Jones coached the 2022-23 season at American, helping to guide the Eagles to a 17-15 mark in the Patriot League. American had marquee non-conference wins on the road at Georgetown and George Washington. Plus, the Eagles picked up a Patriot League win over defending champion Colgate, ending the Red Raiders’ 25-game league win streak. The team won two Patriot tournament games before falling in double overtime in the semifinals.
Prior arriving in Washington D.C. , Jones spent four years and three seasons coaching at Princeton, including the 2021-22 campaign when the Tigers won the Ivy regular-season title at 12-2, had an overall record of 23-7, was runner-up in the Ivy League tournament and earned a berth in the NIT. He was instrumental in helping to guide the program to four team records during that season and helping to coach 2022 Ivy League Player of the Year Tosan Evbuomwam. Over his four years on the staff, Princeton had three first-team All-Ivy selections, two second-team choices, an All-Ivy Academic Team selection and an NABC Second-Team All-District honoree.
In the 2016-17 and 2017-18 seasons, Jones was the associate head coach at his alma mater, Kean. He started his coaching career at Elizabeth High as a junior varsity coach for the 2015-16 season.
Jones played professionally for four seasons following his standout collegiate career. He played in Norway, where he averaged 23 points and 15.2 rebounds for Tromso Storm in 2011-12, leading the BLNO league in points and rebounds. He played the following season in Luxembourg and finished his career with seasons in Finland and Argentina, retiring from playing following the 2014-15 season.
At Kean, Jones was a 2011 first-team Division III All-America choice as a senior and was a runner-up for the Division III player of the year honor. He recorded 24 double-doubles, which led Division III, while finishing second in the country rebounding at 13.7 boards per game and eighth in D-III in scoring at 23.9 points per game. He helped Kean to an 18-8 record.
Jones earned a bachelor’s degree in recreational management from Kean in 2012. Jones’ mother, Desiree, is a National Board Certified teacher in Newark, N.J., and his father, Nathan, has worked for NJ Transit for more than 30 years. He has three older siblings: Nathaniel, Jason and Nicholas.
