Scott Spinelli has been named as an assistant men’s basketball coach at Chicago State.
Spinelli, widely regarded as one of the top assistant coaches and recruiters in the country, brings a wealth of coaching experience to Chicago State with more than 20 years as an assistant, associate or head coach at the Division I level, most recently serving as the interim head coach at Boston College during the 2021 season where he had served as an assistant for eight seasons (2014-21). During his coaching tenure he has been ranked as high as No. 11 in the top 50 assistant coaches according to Hoopscooponline.com, led the recruiting and development of six current NBA players (Khris Middleton, Deandre Jordan, Alex Len, Jake Layman, Jerome Robinson and Ky Bowman) and implemented scouting and game plans to defeat No. 1 Duke at two different schools (Maryland and Boston College).
Spinelli comes to Chicago State after working as a radio and television analyst on the New England Sports Network and as a guest analyst on ESPN, Fox Sports and CBS Radio. He most recently served as president of basketball at NIL Exposure Sports.
During his time at BC, Spinelli developed five 1,000-point scorers and the Eagles first-ever NBA lottery pick, Jerome Robinson in 2018. He led the Eagles program during the COVID shutdown and, as an assistant, oversaw the scouting and game plan to beat top-ranked Duke in December 2017.
Spinelli served as an assistant coach at the University of Maryland (2011-14) where he helped sign three top 25 recruiting classes, was instrumental in helping build the 2016 NCAA Sweet 16 team and produced scouting reports and game plans which led to victories over Duke, on two occasions when the Blue Devils were ranked No. 1 and No. 2 in the nation, and No. 5 Virginia. He also helped the Terps to the 2013 NIT Final Four.
Prior to his time in College Park, Maryland, Spinelli was an associate head coach at Texas A&M (2007-11) where he helped lead the Aggies to their best four-year win total in program history with a record of 97-40, advancing to the second round of the NCAA Tournament and a No. 25 ranking in the final Coaches Poll in 2011.
Spinelli spent one season at Wichita State (2006-07), helping the Shockers to a 17-14 record and were ranked as high as No. 8 in the country and three seasons under Barry Collier at Nebraska (2003-06), where he led the recruitment of two nationally-ranked classes, helping the Cornhuskers reach the postseason twice. Spinelli was at Loyola (Chicago) for two seasons (2001-03), where the Ramblers collected 32 wins, their most since the 1980’s and had other collegiate stops at American (1997-99) and Wyoming (1996-97).
Spinelli began his coaching career in 1990 as the head coach of Milford Academy in Connecticut, where he led the team to a pair of championships. He also started the basketball program at the Winchendon School (1993-96), where he produced several Division I players.
A native of Leominster, Mass., Spinelli is a 1989 graduate of Boston University, where he was a member of the basketball team under coach Mike Jarvis, helping the Terriers advance to the NCAA tournament in 1988. He and his wife, Lynn, have three children: Gianna, Gabriel, and Joseph.
