Davis & Elkins Basketball Staff Update

Davis & Elkins College is excited to announce the addition of three new assistant coaches to the men’s basketball program. Demontrez Austin, Aaron Shambry, and Breland Walton will join new Head Coach Daniel Harris on the sidelines for the 2024-25 season.

Coach Demontrez Austin

Demontrez Austin brings extensive experience and a winning mindset to Davis & Elkins College. He previously served as the assistant men’s basketball coach at Ellsworth Community College, where he helped the Panthers reach the NJCAA National Tournament and win the NJCAA Region XI Championship. During his tenure, he coached one NJCAA All-American and five ICCAC Region XI All-Conference players.

Austin also spent two seasons at Middle Georgia Prep, focusing on skill development, academics, strength and conditioning, and serving as the lead recruiter. Additionally, he has held coaching roles at Andrew College and Reinhardt University.

Prior to his coaching career, Austin played at Jacksonville University where he appeared in 57 games, shooting 53% from the floor and averaging 4 rebounds per game.

“Coach Austin is a great addition to our team,” said Head Coach Daniel Harris. “His knowledge and work ethic will be a huge asset, and he’s going to be a great ambassador for our program. He is a relentless recruiter and very good with player development.”

Coach Aaron Shambry

Aaron Shambry joins D&E after working as a graduate assistant at Ashland University. During his two years there, he helped the Eagles achieve a 39-21 record and developed several standout players, including a GMAC Conference Player of the Year and a Freshman GMAC Player of the Year. He also helped lead the team to the NCAA National Tournament. Shambry’s duties included recruiting, practice planning, academic support, and strength training.

Before Ashland, Shambry was an assistant coach at East Central University and Martin Methodist College from 2015-2020, where he also served as team captain for two years.

“Coach Shambry is full of energy and brings it every single day. He comes from a successful program at Ashland University, and I’m excited to have him help us continue to build a championship program,” said Coach Harris.

Coach Breland Walton

Davis & Elkins is thrilled to welcome back a familiar face. Assistant coach Breland Walton played for the Senators from 2020-2023.

During his time with the team, he played in 56 games, starting 42 of them. He averaged 17.2 points per game, shooting 55% from the field and 36% from three-point range while also pulling down 9 rebounds per game. Walton was a key player in the Senators’ historic 2021-22 season, helping lead the team to 19 wins and their first winning season in 41 years. He was a Second-Team All-Conference selection in 2020-21 and received All-Conference Honorable Mention in 2021-22.

After graduating, Walton played professional basketball for Zakho Club in Iraq, where he averaged 22.9 points, 9 rebounds, and 1.2 assists per game.

“Having Breland back is really exciting. He made a huge impact as a player, and I know he’ll do the same as a coach. He’ll connect with our players and continue to make a lasting impact on our campus,” said Coach Harris.

With these three new coaches on board, Davis & Elkins men’s basketball is looking forward to an exciting upcoming season.
