Saint Leo University President Ed Dadez and Director of Athletics, Wellness & Recreation Marcal Lazenby have officially named Spencer Henke the men’s basketball head coach, removing the interim tag.
“Saint Leo is where my coaching journey began five years ago as a Graduate Assistant, and I’m deeply honored to officially be named head coach of Saint Leo Men’s Basketball,” said Henke. “Thank you to Marcal Lazenby, President Dadez, my family, and my wife Emily for their support throughout this process. This season has been a rollercoaster of heartbreaking losses and thrilling wins, but our team and staff have grown immensely, and I’m excited about what we’re building in the Bowman Center. To Lion Nation, your support is unmatched—keep packing the stands, and I promise we’ll deliver basketball that keeps you on the edge of your seat. GO LIONS!”
Coach Henke has already made a significant impact on the Lions’ basketball program. In addition to his leadership of the varsity team, Henke has successfully established two new JV men’s basketball teams, which have created additional opportunities for student-athletes to develop and compete. His commitment to building a comprehensive program has been a major step forward for Saint Leo basketball.
Henke’s dedication extends beyond the court. He has been actively involved in the community, both on campus and in the local area, strengthening connections and building excitement for the program. His outreach efforts have brought greater visibility to the Lions and fostered a sense of pride among students, faculty, and fans.
“Beginning your head coaching career in one of the toughest Division II leagues in the country is no small task, but I believe that Coach Henke has the passion and determination to take the Lions to the next level,” said Director of Athletics Marcal Lazenby. “We’re really excited to see what Coach Henke can accomplish moving forward.”
Henke first arrived at Saint Leo in the fall of 2020 as a graduate assistant. Following his first season with the Lions, he took over as the head assistant coach and director of recruiting. In November 2022, he was promoted to associate head coach.
During his first season on the Lions bench, Henke played a key role in leading the team to a Sunshine State Conference tournament title in 2021. Three Lions were named to the All-Tournament team, with Frank Webb earning tournament MVP honors.
Henke is a 2020 graduate of Marquette University in his home state of Wisconsin. The Oshkosh native served as a student manager of the men’s basketball team under the direction of former Marquette head coach Steve Wojciechowski. He graduated with a degree in Exercise Physiology. In the fall of 2022, Henke earned a master’s degree in Sports Business from Saint Leo University.
With his proven leadership, focus on player development, and dedication to community engagement, Coach Henke is well-positioned to lead the Lions to future success both on and off the court.
