Rodney Broughton has been hired at Southern University at Shreveport as the Athletic Director and Head Men’s Basketball Coach, bringing more than a decade of experience in collegiate coaching, recruiting, and athletic program development.
Most recently, Broughton served as Assistant Coach and Recruiting Coordinator at Alabama A&M University, working under Head Coach Otis Hughley. During his tenure, the Bulldogs made three consecutive SWAC Tournament appearances, including two semifinal finishes, and earned a berth in the 2023–2024 CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament (CIT). Alabama A&M secured its first-ever Division I postseason tournament win outside of the SWAC, marking a historic milestone for the program.
Broughton played a key role in the creation and execution of the Bulldog Bash, the first HBCU-hosted Multi-Team Event (MTE), which featured Coastal Carolina, South Carolina State, and the University of Indianapolis (UIndy). The event garnered national attention and elevated the profile of HBCU basketball.
As Recruiting Coordinator, Broughton built a broad and impactful recruiting network that extended internationally, while also managing academic support, scouting, team travel, elite camps, and community engagement initiatives.
Prior to Alabama A&M, Broughton held coaching roles at Meridian Community College, Northwestern State University, and the University of Mobile, where he gained valuable experience across multiple levels of college basketball. At Meridian, he helped turn a struggling program into a 22-win team and a Region 23 Championship contender, with multiple players earning All-Conference honors and advancing to four-year universities. At Northwestern State, he served as a graduate assistant and video coordinator under longtime coach Mike McConathy, assisting with scouting, player development, and operations while earning his master’s degree in Sports Administration. His collegiate coaching journey began at the University of Mobile, where he worked under Coach Joe Niland, contributing to a nationally ranked defense and supporting both varsity and junior varsity programs.
