Former New Mexico State men’s basketball coach Greg Heiar has reached a settlement with the university over a wrongful termination lawsuit stemming from his 2023 firing according to a report from ESPN.
Heiar alleged he was made a “sacrificial lamb” for a series of controversies during his first season, including a fatal self-defense shooting involving player Mike Peake and a hazing investigation that uncovered allegations of sexual assault and harassment. The hazing probe ultimately led to an $8 million payout to two former players and one of their fathers. NMSU canceled the remainder of the 2022–23 season and dismissed Heiar in February 2023, prompting him to sue the school for breach of contract and other claims. Terms of the settlement were not disclosed.
Heiar, who had previously been accused of leaving town with his team following the shooting incident while police sought to question several players, maintained his innocence throughout the ordeal. His attorneys expressed satisfaction with the resolution and said Heiar looks forward to continuing his coaching career. In 2024, he led Trinity Valley Community College in Athens, Texas, to a national junior college championship and was named national junior college coach of the year.
