Kansas men’s basketball is set to add Tony Bland as an assistant coach, according to multiple reports including one from ESPN.
Bland, who spent last season on Danny Sprinkle’s staff at Washington, will replace Chase Buford, who recently departed for an assistant coaching role with the Denver Nuggets. A Los Angeles native, Bland has deep coaching roots on the West Coast, including time at San Diego State and USC, where he served as associate head coach under Andy Enfield. He also played collegiately at Syracuse and San Diego State before beginning his coaching career.
Bland’s career took a turn in 2017 when he was among several assistants arrested in the FBI’s college basketball corruption probe. He later pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit bribery, receiving probation, community service, and a three-year NCAA show-cause penalty. After coaching at St. Bernard High School in Los Angeles, he returned to the college ranks with Washington before making the move to KU.
Bland’s hiring marks Bill Self’s third major offseason addition to the staff, joining Jacque Vaughn and Lexi Price, while former player KJ Adams recently came aboard as video coordinator.
