Amid a nine-game losing streak, Winston-Salem State has parted ways with head men’s basketball coach Corey Thompson and named assistant coach Tony Jones as interim head coach. While the university has not yet issued an official announcement, the move was mentioned on the Rams’ livestream just prior to tip-off today.
Thompson, a WSSU alum, was in his second season leading his alma mater. The Rams finished 5-22 (2-13 CIAA) last season and are currently 7-15 overall, including a 2-11 mark in CIAA play this year.
Jones joined the WSSU staff in the summer of 2024 following time at the high school level. He previously served as an assistant at UNC Pembroke (2020-21) and Fayetteville State (2017-19), where he also stepped in as interim head coach during the 2019-20 season.
An official release from Winston-Salem State is expected early next week.
