TCU hires Hobbie as Assistant Basketball Coach

TCU head men’s basketball coach Jamie Dixon has hired Jerry Hobbie as an assistant coach.

With 29 years of coaching experience, Hobbie will assist in all aspects of the program with an emphasis on improved shooting.

“I’m excited to welcome Jerry to our staff,” Dixon said. “I’ve known Jerry for nearly 30 years and is well regarded nationally as someone who can develop players, especially when it comes to shooting. His dad, Ernie, was the original shot doctor. Jerry has worked for some of the top coaches in the country in Larry Brown, Tom Penders, Mike Hopkins, Tim O’Toole and Danny Sprinkle. I met him when I was back East, but he has contacts and has recruited throughout the country and will be a tremendous asset to our players and staff.”

Hobbie spent the past nine seasons at Washington, seven under Hopkins and the past two with Sprinkle as an assistant coach. He was a part of the Huskies team that won the Pac-12 Conference Championship in 2019, which was Washington’s first NCAA bid in seven years.

Hobbie’s work with the Huskies was noticeable with improved shooting percentages in several players over his career including four NBA Draft picks which were Jaden McDaniels, Jaylen Nowell, Isaiah Stewart and Matisse Thybulle.

As a team, Washington improved from 68.2 percent from the free throw line in 2024-25 to 76.4 percent this past season.

Prior to Washington, Hobbie spent seven years on the SMU staff in a variety of roles under Brown and Matt Doherty. He was an assistant coach, director of operations, director of recruiting and special assistant to the head coach from 2010-17. The Mustangs made the NCAA Tournament in 2015 and in 2017 when they registered the most wins in program history with a 30-5 record. Hobbie assisted in the improvement of NBA Draft picks Sterling Brown, Shake Milton and Semi Ojeleye.

Prior to SMU, Hobbie was an assistant coach at Houston from 2007-10 under Penders. Helped the Cougars reach the NCAA Tournament for the first time in two decades. In his first season at Houston, the Cougars shot a school record 77 percent from the free throw line in the 2007-08 season, which ranked sixth nationally.

Hobbie also spent eight seasons at Fairfield University (1998-2006). He was the assistant coach for the first five seasons before moving to associate head coach for three years under O’Toole. Hobbie helped the Stags post back-to-back winning seasons for the first time in 25 years.

Hobbie was a standout shooter as a player at Fordham with a career free throw percentage of 81.5 which ranks sixth in program history. He holds school records for the most assists in a game with 15 and career steals with 261. Also, his 87.7 percent shooting from the free throw line in the 1981-82 season is the second-best for a single season at Fordham. Hobbie was a member of the 1983 MAAC championship team and was inducted into the 2006 Fordham Hall of Fame.

He went on to play professionally in the United States Basketball League and the English Basketball League in 1985-86, before working in the private sector of the US government as a bond broker. During his time on Wall Street, Hobbie assisted at St. Patrick High School, the nationally renowned school that Hobbie had also attended and played for.

Hobbie has two daughters, Joanna and Lea.
