The Boston University men’s basketball team has added video coordinator Denzel Washington to its staff ahead of the 2026-27 season, as announced by head coach Joe Jones on Thursday.
Washington joins the Terriers after serving as an assistant coach for three seasons at Rhode Island College under head coach Sam Ferry. During his time in Providence, Washington helped the Harbormen post back-to-back 15-plus win seasons in 2023-24 and 2024-25 — the first time since 2013-15 they accomplished that feat — and the Harbormen compiled an overall record of 42-38 while reaching the Little East semifinal twice .
Prior to his stint in Providence, he spent the previous six years as an assistant coach at The Woodstock Academy in Connecticut, where Washington was involved in nearly every aspect of running one of the premier prep school programs in New England. He assisted with developing practice plans, game plans and with scouting opponents. He spearheaded recruitment efforts and then helped those student-athletes continue on to careers at the Division I, Division II, Division III, Junior College, and professional levels.
In addition, Washington served as the head coach of Woodstock Academy’s Blue Team, overseeing a staff of assistant coaches and athletic trainers, as well as school staff to coordinate the daily operations of the program. That three-year run culminated in a Power 5 AA championship in 2021-2022.
Washington’s impact extends beyond the court, as an advocate for social justice. In July of 2021, Woodstock Academy named Washington its first director of equity and inclusion. Charged with developing a program to keep the school focused on the issue of equity and inclusion, Washington continues in that role today. He is also the area director for all New England chapters of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc, overseeing the operations and programming for all chapters in the region. He has also conduced conferences and facilitated scholarship opportunities for inner-city youth.
Washington graduated from Fitchburg State with a bachelor’s degree in psychological science with a minor in history in 2017.
