Maines joins Colby College Basketball Staff

T.J. Maines ‘95 has rejoined the Mules coaching staff in 2026-27, bringing 30 years of coaching experience back to Mayflower Hill. He previously served as an assistant under legendary coach Dick Whitmore from 1998 to 2005.

In his first stretch as an assistant with the Mules, Maines worked primarily with the guards and wings and was an active recruiter. He also has firsthand knowledge of the program as a player from 1991 to 1995, a stretch in which the Mules went 82-16. The Class of ‘95, which included Matt Gaudet and Greg Walsh, is one of the winningest in program history. Highlight from that group include an ECAC Championship in 1993 and the program’s first NCAA tournament bids in 1994 and 1995. A captain as a senior, Maines was a connector between teammates and alumni. He also takes credit for convincing a young BC High standout, Dave McLaughlin, to choose Mayflower Hill after hosting him on his recruiting visit.

From 2006 to 2013, Maines was the head coach at nearby Thomas College, where he turned the program around. The Terriers had not won 10 games in a season in the thirteen years before his arrival. In his third year, he led Thomas to the No. 1 seed in the NAC tournament and a trip to the championship game. The 2009-10 team set a school record with 18 wins, and other highlights included a home win over No. 13 WPI and the only victories in the Colby-Thomas rivalry (2011- 13). Across six recruiting classes, Maines brought in five players who earned Rookie of the Year honors in the NAC, the State of Maine, or both. Seven players earned first or second team All-NAC recognition, including 2010 Player of the Year Andrew Duncanson.

Maines is currently the athletic director at Cony High School in Augusta, a role he began in 2022. Before that, he spent nine years as Cony’s varsity basketball coach, where his teams were consistent playoff participants. Known for a fast-paced style, they led their division or the state in scoring most years, and the program produced several all-conference and all-region players.

Maines lives in Waterville with his wife, Brenda, and their children, Gabby and Anderson.
