Some “dirt” to start the week…
•Two names that I have heard surround the vacancy at Black Hills State (SD) are Augustana (SD) assistant head coach Jeff Trumbauer and Sheridan College (WY) head coach Steve Smiley. Trumbauer has been at Augustana for the past four seasons, and was the head coach at Jamestown (ND) before that. Smiley just wrapped up his fifth season at Sheridan, where he also serves as the AD. He is also a former assistant at Black Hills State.
• Last month, I mentioned the finalists at Central CC (NE) (http://hoopdirt.com/blog/2175b358/central-cc-ne-finalists/…). It sounds like the choice is Clarke (IA) head coach Jerry Drymon. He led his squad to an 18-12 record this past season – his sixth at the helm. He has also been the head coach at Southwestern CC (IA). Look for an official announcement soon.
• I have heard that Lake Erie College assistant Michael Cruz has departed and will become the head coach at Colerain (OH) HS. Last season was his first at Lake Erie. He has also been the head coach at Lorain County CC and a staffer at UNC-Charlotte.
• I keep hearing the same two names come up when talking about the RPI job…Brown assistant Paul Halas and Harvard associate head coach Brian DeStefano. Halas is an RPI alum who won an NCAA DIII National Championship as an assistant at Amherst in 2013. DeStefano has been at Harvard for the past six seasons and is a former GA and manager at Duke.
• I have heard that Rhode Island College assistant Mike Romano will be retained by new head coach Mike Byrnes. Romano was a part of Bob Walsh’s staff at RIC for the past two seasons and served as a graduate manager at Marist before that.
