Philadelphia University Basketball All Access Clinic

Philadelphia University basketball head coaches Herb Magee and Tom Shirley are hosting a one-day All-Access Coaches Clinic in the Gallagher Athletic Center on Saturday, Oct. 19 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

At the clinic—which is designed for coaches at all levels—Magee and Shirley instruct the coach on the best practices for teaching the game of basketball, how to build a winning environment, offensive and defensive strategies, and coaching philosophies.

A 2011 Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame inductee, Magee is the winningest men’s basketball coach in NCAA history with 960 victories. In 46 seasons at the end of the Rams’ bench, Magee has led Philadelphia University to the NCAA Tournament 26 times and the 1970 NCAA College Division National Championship. In 2005, Magee was selected as a “Guardian of the Game” by the National Association of Basketball Coaches under its Education core value and was honored at the NCAA Division I Final Four. Two years later, Magee was given the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Philadelphia Sports Congress. The Philadelphia Sports Writers Association tabbed Magee as its “Living Legend” on January 30, 2012.

Shirley is seventh in NCAA Division II women’s basketball history with 641 career victories, 492 at Philadelphia University. In 24 seasons at Philadelphia University, the Rams have been to five NCAA Tournaments, won 20 or more games 17 times, claimed two Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference titles, had 10 ECAC runner-up finishes, and produced five All-Americans and one National Player of the Year. In 1993, Shirley earned the American Women’s Sports Federation Division II Coach of the Year and Converse District Coach of the Year awards.

The cost of the clinic is $75 and includes a set of coach Magee’s DVDs, a $20 coupon for All-Access DVD set (which is nine hours of Magee’s practices), a clinic notebook, court diagrams, a complimentary lunch, and a ticket voucher for a 2013-14 Philadelphia University basketball game.
