Daily Dirt II – 4/23/12

Crazy day today….as we wait for the announcement at Virginia Tech, here’s the second installment of the “Daily Dirt”….

• It sounds like Manhattan assistant Scott Padget is headed south and will join Benny Seltzer’s staff at Samford. Padget is an eight-year NBA vet who has been on the Manattan staff for the past two years. The 28th selection in the 1999 draft (Utah) also spent one season on John Calipari’s staff at Kentucky. Samford AD Martin Newton served on Coach Cal’s staff with Padgett in 2009-2010.

• I can confirm that Chris Watz will be hired as a full-time assistant at Olivet College. Watz has been the head coach at Bay City Western HS (MI) for the past five seasons. He is the first hire for new Olivet head coach Chris Coles.

• I have heard that Lake Land College (IL) assistant Landon Shipley is involved with an assistant job at Missouri-St. Louis. Shipley is a St. Louis native and was named the Post-Dispatch St. Louis Metro Player of the Year as a prep senior. He played collegiately at both Austin Peay and Illinois State.

• An excellent source told me that former Carroll University head coach and current Waukesha West HS head coach Dave Schultz has interviewed at Ripon College (WI). Ripon and Carroll are in the same conference and Schultz had a ton of success at Carroll. He went 109-64 in seven seasons, including the school’s only Sweet 16 appearance.

• Staying in Wisconsin….I’ve heard that Wisconsin-Oshkosh is in no hurry to replace recently retired head coach Ted Van Dellen. I’ve heard that they don’t plan on hiring until the new fiscal year starts on July 1st, so the hiring process won’t start until late May and interviews won’t take place until sometime in June.

• Allen CC (KS) has hired Andy Shaw as their head basketball coach. There has been no official announcement, but he is now listed as the HC on their website: http://www.allencc.edu/index.php?option=com_content&…
