Quinnipiac men’s basketball head coach Tom Moore has announced the hiring of Tony Newsom as an assistant coach heading into the 2015-16 season. Newsom comes to Quinnipiac after four seasons as the associate head coach at Fairfield University.

“I am thrilled to add Tony Newsom to our coaching staff here at Quinnipiac University,” Moore said. “Tony brings a wealth of experience from his 21 years as a Division I assistant coach at several outstanding academic institutions. As a former player at Niagara and with coaching stops at Rider, Siena, and Fairfield, we are getting someone who is very familiar with the MAAC and will help us to continue establish ourselves in one of the premiere mid-major leagues in the country.”

Newsom is the first men’s basketball assistant coach hired at Quinnipiac since Moore arrived for the 2007-08 season. He replaces Scott Burrell who left the Bobcats to become the head coach at Southern Connecticut State University. Newsom has been an assistant at the NCAA Division I level for the past 21 years, making several stops around the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.

At Fairfield, Newsom helped guide the Stags to back-to-back postseason tournament appearances, including the 2012 and 2013 Collegeinsider.com Tournament. Newsom’s four years at Fairfield were preceded by a seven-year term at Princeton University, where he served as an assistant for four years with current Stags’ head coach Syndney Johnson.

Prior to joining the coaching staff at Princeton, Newsom spent three seasons at the College of the Holy Cross, which featured two Patriot League Championships and a pair of trips to the NCAA Tournament. After two seasons as an assistant, Newsom was elevated to associate head coach for the 2003-04 season.

Newsom’s coaching resume also featured stops at a pair of Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference schools in Rider (1997-2001) and Siena (1995-1997). In 1998, Newsom helped the Broncs to the National Invitational Tournament (NIT) in his first year with the program.

“Tony is a person with extremely high character and a strong track record of professionalism who I think will be a great role model for our student-athletes,” Moore added. “He is excited and focused about the opportunity here.”

Newsom was a four-year letterwinner at Niagara University, where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business commerce in 1993. He also helped the Purple Eagles to a 1993 NIT berth in his senior season.
