Newberry College head men’s basketball coach Dave Davis has announced the addition of Jay Reid to the staff as an assistant coach.
Reid comes to Newberry after a season at USC Salkehatchie, where he served as associate head coach for one of the youngest coaching staffs in the nation at any collegiate level. He helped direct an offense that averaged 85 points per game and produced an NJCAA All-American, Raheem Freeman, who averaged 22 points per game while shooting 33% from three-point range.
He also focused heavily on developing classroom discipline having seven Salkehatchie players who achieved above a 3.0 grade point average.
Prior to his time at Salkehatchie, Reid coached at Davis & Elkins for two seasons. While at D&E, Reid helped bring players into the program from eight states, and helped the Senators finish their second straight year among the top of the G-MAC in statistical categories such as field goal percentage offense, field goal percentage defense and overall rebounding.
During his first season with the Senators, Reid helped the Senators earn their most wins in a season since the 1985-86 season. During conference tournament play, the Senators defeated Cedarville, registering D&E’s first postseason win 1980.
Along with helping the Senators reach new heights in wins his first season, Reid helped guide the Senators to an new highs in grade point average as well as a 100% graduation rate. In his time at D&E, four players went on to sign professional contracts, guards Wesley Sprinkle and Brian Dixon were G-MAC statistical champions in three-point field goal percentage, both shooting 49% from behind the arc. He recruited players from eight states, including G-MAC All-Freshman Rickenjee Bellevue and Freshman of the Year Kevin Simpson. Devin Miller received a First Team All-Conference accolade and captured the league’s scoring title, averaging 20 points per game and Kevin Bracy-Davis also received First Team All-Conference while averaging 19.7 points per game.
Prior to his time at Davis & Elkins, Reid spent four seasons with Wofford College as a student assistant coach.
In four seasons at Wofford, he helped the program to a 79-55 overall record. The Terriers reached postseason play three times, including 2010 and 2011 NCAA Tournament appearances resulting in single digit losses to Wisconsin and BYU. Helping with all facets of the program, Reid helped in the recruitment process of the 2014 and 2015 Southern Conference championship teams.
In his time at Wofford, Reid helped develop players on and off the floor, resulting in an Honorable Mention All-American, 2 SoCon Players of the Year, a SoCon Defensive Player of the Year and a First Team Academic All-American. Reid also helped construct workouts for 10 All-SoCon players and 8 student-athletes who are currently playing or have played professional basketball in European and South American countries.
Currently working on his masters in Athletic Administration, Reid graduated from Wofford in 2013 with a degree in Economics and a certification to teach high school in the Social Studies field.
