Capital University Men’s Basketball and Head Coach Damon Goodwin has announced a reorganization of the coaching staff for the 2019-20 season.
Anthony Gholson will return for his sixth year with the Capital men’s basketball program and has been elevated to top assistant coach. He will now take the lead with Capital’s recruiting efforts, assist with game and practice preparation and lead in-season individual workouts.
“Anthony brings a wealth of experience to the position from both a coaching and recruiting standpoint,” said Coach Goodwin. “He also knows our program from the inside and I’m excited about the ideas he has to better our program.”
While with Cap over his first five seasons 13 Crusaders have earned all-conference awards, including two first team selections (Mark Minch, 2016 and Austin Schreck, 2019). After his first season, Gholson guided forward Michael Sommer (Second Team), and guards AJ Dixon and Mitch Westerheide (honorable mention) to All-OAC laurels. Spencer Niekamp went on to become OAC Player of the Year and a first team all-conference pick. Schreck was named to the All-OAC second team in 2018 and in 2019 was First Team All-OAC, OAC Player of the Year, OAC Defensive Player of the Year, D3hoops and NABC First Team All-Region, Academic All-American and an NABC All-American.
Coach Goodwin also announced that he will add another assistant coach to the mix. The Crusaders welcome Ohio Wesleyan University graduate and AAU coach Nick Felhaber to the staff.
Felhaber spent the last two years working with The Hoop Group, one of the premier Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) programs in the States based out of Neptune, N.J. There, he began as the director of external partnerships and was later promoted to the director of recruiting.
“Nick is a hungry and energetic young coach coming from one of the best AAU programs in the country (The Hoop Group)”, said Head Coach Damon Goodwin. “He is originally from Toledo and knows the AAU scene very well to help with our recruiting efforts.”
Prior to working with The Hoop Group, Felhaber was the head coach of the New Jersey Shoreshots 15U team and the assistant coach of the 17U team.
Felhaber is a 2015 graduate of Ohio Wesleyan where he played and captained the Battlin’ Bishops men’s basketball team. At OWU, Felhaber earned Honorable Mention All-NCAC honors and his senior class graduated with the most wins in school history.
