South Dakota State men’s basketball coach Eric Henderson announced the addition of Bryan Petersen as assistant coach Monday.
Petersen spent the last six seasons as head coach of the Kirkwood Community College men’s basketball program, leading the program to the 2016 and 2019 NJCAA Division II Championships while compiling a 157-38 overall record. He earned regional and national coach of the year honors in both national championship seasons.
“Bryan is a young, dynamic and proven champion,” Henderson said. “His ability to recruit high-level talent and bring people together are qualities that will help Jackrabbit basketball continue its tradition of excellence. We are super excited to have Bryan and his wife, Renae, as part of the Jackrabbit family.”
24 Eagles earned All-Region honors under Petersen’s tutelage, including nine first team selections. He coached four NJCAA All-Americans and saw future Jackrabbit Doug Wilson named NJCAA Division II National Player of the Year in 2018-19. The Eagles found success in the classroom as well with 20 players being named to the All-Region Academic teams.
Petersen spent the 2012-13 season as an assistant at Kirkwood CC, coming to the Eagles after three seasons at Iowa State. He worked as a Cyclone for one season for Greg McDermott (2009-10) and two seasons for Fred Hoiberg (2010-12) as a graduate assistant coach alongside current SDSU director of operations Tyler Glidden.
The Clinton, Iowa native played two seasons at Iowa State after a two-year career at Kirkwood Community College. He sank 97 career 3-pointers as a Cyclone while starting 64 consecutive games as a recruited walk-on. Prior to his ISU career, he was named a First Team All-American in his final season at Kirkwood, taking home Region XI Player of the Year honors. Petersen was also the first coach in the history of the NJCAA DII National Tournament to participate in a National Championship game as a player and win the National Championship as a coach.
Petersen graduated from Iowa State with a degree in Kinesiology in 2009 and earned his master’s degree in Higher Education-Educational Leadership from Iowa State in 2012. He will reside in Brookings with his wife, Renae.
