New Mexico State head men’s basketball coach Paul Weir rounded out his coaching staff with the addition of Marc Hsu.
Hsu is very much familiar with Las Cruces, having spent his second year in the collegiate ranks at New Mexico State under legendary head coach Lou Henson as a volunteer director of basketball operations for the 2004-05 season.
“Marc is an amazing addition to our program,” Weir said. “I have seen his recruiting abilities first hand and knew from day one I needed him here with us. Having been with Lou and New Mexico State before makes it even easier for us to bring him on board.”
He spent the last three seasons (2013-16) at Western Athletic Conference foe, CSU Bakersfield, under head coach Rod Barnes. During his time there, Hsu helped Bakersfield earn the program’s first-ever NCAA Tournament berth since transitioning to Division I in 2007-08. The win was also CSUB’s first win over New Mexico State in 12 contests. The ‘Runners went on to battle second-seeded Oklahoma in a tightly contested showdown before the Sooners ran away with an 82-68 victory.
Prior to his time at CSUB, Hsu served as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Texas Southern (2010-12), where he helped the Tigers win the regular-season title and an NIT berth in 2011. Hsu also coached a pair of All-Southwestern Athletic Conference players in Omar Strong and Fred Sturdivant.
Hsu spent the 2008-10 season at Binghamton under head coach Kevin Broadus. In his second season with the Bearcats, Hsu guided Dylan Talley to American East Freshman of the Year honors, while Greer Wright earned First-Team All-AEC accolades. In his first season with BU, the Bearcats captured the American East regular-season and tournament titles and finished the season at No. 22 in the final CollegeInsiders.com Mid-Major Poll. It was also Binghamton’s first-ever conference championship and NCAA Tournament berth.
He also had a stint at Oregon State (2007-08) where he was the director of basketball operations after spending the 2007 summer as an assistant coach at Chipola Junior College. The year before that, Hsu was the head men’s basketball coach at Laurinburg Prep (2006-07). He coached eight former players that went on to play at the Division I level while five moved on to play professionally.
He earned his first assistant coaching position at Barton County Community College (2005-06), and helped coach four players move onto the Division I level. Before he was on the staff of Aggie legend Lou Henson, Hsu was the volunteer assistant men’s basketball coach at Cabrini College (2003-04).
Hsu received his bachelors of science in business administration with a minor in sports science from Cabrini College and is currently working on his master’s degree.
