Anderson University Adds Two To Men’s Basketball Staff

Anderson University has added two members to its men’s basketball coaching staff.

Head coach Owen Handy has announced the additions of assistant coaches Peyton Wyatt and Drew Messmer.

Wyatt spent the past four seasons playing basketball at Elmhurst College reaching the round of 32 in the NCAA Division III tournament his junior and senior year. Wyatt is currently ranked second all-time at Elmhurst College for three-point field goal percentage at 42.8. In his junior year, he topped the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin in three-point percentage with a mark of 47.4.

He graduated from Newton Community High School in Newton, Ill. in 2008 where he is the all-time leading scorer and an IBCA All-State selection his junior and senior year in basketball.

Wyatt has a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education at Elmhurst College and is now pursuing a Master’s in Business Administration at Anderson University.

“Peyton comes to us from an outstanding college program at Elmhurst, and he came very strongly recommended by two coaches who I know and trust in John Baines and Chris Martin,” said Handy. “Peyton knows what it takes to be successful at our level, having helped lead Elmhurst to back to back NCAA Tournament appearances and I know he is motivated to help out team do the same thing.”

Messmer enters his first season on the Anderson University men’s basketball staff as an assistant coach.

Prior to coming to Anderson, Messmer was a middle school basketball coach in the Southeast Dubois School Corporation in Ferdinand, Ind.  He also coached PCB 2K17 which is a part of the Pocket City AAU program.

Before he became a coach, Messmer worked for Prep Hoops Indiana.  There, he served as the southern Indiana recruiting specialist and gained knowledge in recruiting, developing scouting reports, and networking.

“Drew is a high energy guy and hard worker who is very motivated to coach. He brings a diverse set of experience to our staff and solidifies our already strong recruiting ties in Southern Indiana,” said Handy.

Messmer is currently finishing his undergraduate degree through Western Governors University where he will receive his Bachelor’s in Business Management in April.

“These two coaches will bring a lot to our program, helping elevate the energy in our practices and allowing us invest more deeply to in-season skill development so that we are helping each of our players continue to grow all the time,” added Handy.

The men’s basketball season opens at O.C. Lewis Gym with a Nov. 15 contest against Illinois Tech.
