Midway University head men’s basketball coach, Joe Krupinski, recently announced the hiring of Marquis Estill as the assistant men’s basketball coach.
“We are very excited to add Marquis to our basketball family at Midway,” said Krupinski. “With his combination of coaching and playing experience at the highest levels, and his commitment to developing student-athletes on and off the court and in the classroom, he is an ideal fit to help us get our program off the ground and achieve success – both in the short and long term.”
Originally from Richmond, Ky., Estill played at the University of Kentucky for three seasons from 2000-2003 under then head coach, Tubby Smith.
Prior to joining the Wildcats, Estill starred at Madison Central High School. He completed his career for the Indians by averaging 20.5 points and 11.3 rebounds per game as a senior leading Madison Central to a berth in the KHSAA Sweet 16.
Estill was named the Kentucky Gatorade Player of the Year as well as being named a finalist for Mr. Basketball. He received numerous all-tournament team honors such as All-District, All-Region and was voted All-State by the Associated Press, the Lexington Herald-Leader and the Louisville Courier-Journal.
Estill finished his three year career with UK scoring a total of 936 total points for an average of 9.3 points per game. For the 2002-03 season, Estill was named to the All-NCAA Regional Team, All-SEC (Second Team) and the All-SEC Tournament Team.
Estill left Kentucky as one of the most efficient shooters in the history of the men’s basketball program. He holds the record for the best career field-goal percentage in Kentucky basketball history. He recorded a 60.13 shooting percentage making 365 field goals in 607 attempts.
After finishing up his three year career at Kentucky, Estill joined the professional ranks playing professionally overseas. In 2003, he signed to play for Messina of the Italian League where he played in 25 games averaging 10.8 points and 7.8 rebounds per games.
The following year, Estill played for Udinese, also in the Italian league. Estill averaged 8.7 points and 8.3 rebounds per game in 14 games. He also went on to play professionally in Japan, Dubai and Argentina.
Estill would return to Kentucky in 2012 were he joined John Calipari’s staff as an undergraduate assistant. While working under Calipari, Estill completed his degree and graduated from the University of Kentucky in May of 2013.
Recently, Estill has served as an assistant at Paul Laurence Dunbar High School where he helped lead the Bulldogs to 33 wins and just six losses as they won the 2016 Whitaker Bank/KHSAA Boys Sweet Sixteen Basketball Tournament.
Krupinski added, “Marquis has been around some of the best coaches in the country and has been a part of successful teams wherever he has been. We look forward to him bringing his knowledge and winning attitude to our program.”
