Keiser University head basketball coach Rollie Massimino won the 800th game of his career last night with a 77-47 trouncing over visiting Trinity Baptist. Massimino has now joined the prestigious 800 win club that includes two other active coaches in Duke Head Coach Mike Krzyzewski and Syracuse Head Coach Jim Boeheim (and soon to be West Virginia head coach Bob Huggins who sits at 799). Best known for winning the 1985 National Championship at Villanova, Massimino built the Keiser program from scratch in 2006 (it was then Northwood University), and has transformed Seahawks basketball into a national powerhouse in the NAIA.
Over the years, Massimino has racked up numerous awards as a coach. In 1985, he was tabbed National Coach of the Year by both MacGregor Sporting Goods and Playboy magazine while in 1982 he earned Big East Coach of the Year accolades, just one of eight times he was honored on a league basis in the NCAA. In 2011 he was named the NAIA National Coach of the Year and earned the Rawlings National Coach of the Year in 2012. He was also named as the HoopDirt.com NAIA Coach of the Week in January 2016.
Massimino will go for win #801 on Friday night as his squad takes on Queen City College in the English Family Classic hosted by Keiser.
