Paul Trevor Resigns as Head Basketball Coach at San Francisco State; Becomes Co-Head Coach at Stanislaus State

Stanislaus State Athletics Director Mike Matoso today announced the appointment of Paul Trevor to the position of co-head coach of men’s basketball, joining Larry Reynolds at the helm of the Warriors.

The move to create a co-head coaching position was a mutual decision of Reynolds and Matoso, constructed to ensure a smooth transition for the program. Reynolds has been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.

“It is going to be a great opportunity for me to be working with Coach Reynolds,” Trevor said.  “He is extremely well-respected throughout the coaching profession and has been a mentor for me throughout my career. I’m also fired-up to be joining the Warrior family. Stan State is an exciting and growing athletic department with fantastic facilities. The University has made a commitment to athletic excellence and I am looking forward to being part of it.”

Trevor, 48, comes to Turlock after raising the basketball program at San Francisco State to new heights. In seven years as the Gators’ head coach he guided his teams to a 107-86 record, including 80-68 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association – considered the nation’s toughest Division II conference. He took the Gators to five CCAA Tournaments, and this past season, after a 10-0 start, SFSU spent back-to-back weeks in the national top-25 rankings for the first time in school history. The Gators finished 25-6 and went to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 23 years, leading to Trevor being named the NABC West Region Co-Coach of the Year and an end-of-season No. 22 national ranking for the program.

“Paul Trevor is a CCAA and a Division II guy,” Matoso said. “He has had tremendous success and has a long-time relationship with Larry, which will help to make this a smooth transition. We are very excited that he has accepted this opportunity and all of us are looking forward to the future of the program.”

Trevor and Reynolds not only are long-time friends, but they emerged from the same program. When Reynolds left CSU San Bernardino in 2002 to become the head coach at Long Beach State, his assistant Jeff Oliver took over the Coyotes’ program and immediately hired Trevor as his assistant coach. Prior to going to San Bernardino, Trevor spent one year as an assistant coach at the University of San Francisco and six years as the top assistant coach at Sonoma State, his alma mater.

“I think Coach Trevor will be a tremendous addition to our program,” Reynolds said. “He has an abundance of knowledge about the CCAA, and is respected as a players’ coach, a tireless recruiter and a keen basketball strategist. “I am excited for the opportunity to work alongside him and am looking forward to a new era here at Stan State.”

Trevor holds a bachelor’s degree in sociology and is pursuing a master’s degree in sports management from the University of San Francisco. A native of Fairfax, Trevor is married to the former Cari Lyn Johnson. They have a daughter, Emma Kate.
