UMKC head men’s basketball coach Kareem Richardson announced the addition of Josh Sash as an assistant coach.
“We would like to welcome Josh and his family to our UMKC family,” commented Richardson. “Josh is highly regarded in the basketball profession for his ability to teach, coach and recruit at a very high level.”
Sash begins his first season with the Roos after serving as the head assistant coach at Indian Hills Community College in Ottumwa, Iowa, for the previous two seasons.
“I am thrilled to join Kareem and his staff at UMKC,” shared Sash. “Kareem is one of the best up-and-coming head coaches in the country. He and his staff have done a great job building the program at UMKC and progressing it in the right direction. I am fortunate for the opportunity to become a part of it. Kansas City is a special place and my family and I are excited to become a part of the community.”
In his two seasons with the Warriors, the program turned in a 58-10 overall record with two national tournament appearances. In 2016-17, Indian Hills swept the Region 11 regular season and postseason championships and won the district title game. Under the recruiting and coaching of Sash, there have been 19 Division I signees come out of Indian Hills in the past two season and two National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) All-American selections.
Sash came to Indian Hills from State Fair Community College in Sedalia, Mo., where he was an assistant for five years. The Roadrunners were 89-63 in those five seasons, including a 26-7 record and a national tournament berth in 2013-14, the most successful season in school history. State Fair won their first-ever national tourney game, beating Shelton State in overtime.
Sash helped lead State Fair to a 24-7 record in his first season when they appeared in the championship game of their region’s post-season tournament for the first time since 1979.
Prior to his stint at State Fair, Sash was an assistant coach at Temple College, a junior college in Texas. Before that, he was the video coordinator at Providence. The Friars were 19-14 in his lone season in Rhode Island and earned a berth in the postseason National Invitation Tournament (NIT).
Sash was part of an historic season at Drake University, serving as a graduate assistant coach under Keno Davis in 2007-08, a year when the Bulldogs went 28-5, won the Missouri Valley Conference regular season and tournament titles and received a No. 5 seed in the NCAA tourney.
The Oskaloosa, Iowa, native began his coaching career in his hometown, as an undergraduate student assistant at William Penn University. He was a varsity student assistant for four years and head coach of the junior varsity squad for two years.
Sash has an associate’s degree from the Computer Programmer/Analyst program at Indian Hills and went on to obtain a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education from William Penn in 2006. He completed his master’s degree in Education and Effective Teaching from Drake in 2009.
