Dobbs Added to Hamilton College Basketball Staff

Sherry Dobbs, who was an assistant coach with the St. Lawrence University men’s basketball program during the 2016-17 season, has joined the Hamilton College men’s basketball coaching staff in the same capacity.

Dobbs helped guide the Saints to a 20-7 record, including 13-3 in the Liberty League, and an NCAA Division III championship appearance in his only season with the program.

Dobbs has more than 20 years of collegiate coaching experience including 13 seasons as the head men’s basketball coach at SUNY Potsdam from 2003 to 2016. He led Potsdam to a pair of trips to the NCAA championship, two SUNYAC tournament titles, a SUNYAC regular season crown and a spot in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Upstate tournament. He was voted the 2005 SUNYAC Coach of the Year as the Bears finished 27-4 and advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals. In 2005-06 Potsdam led NCAA Division III in 3-point shooting percentage.

“We feel fortunate that someone with Coach Dobbs’ experience, success and enthusiasm will be joining our community and basketball program,” head coach Adam Stockwell said. “He has shown an ability over many years to consistently recruit and successfully relate to student-athletes while also helping them develop as individuals. We look forward to Coach Dobbs being involved with us as our program continues to move in an exciting direction.”

Dobbs has also been an assistant coach at Ithaca College (1998-2003), St. Lawrence (1997-98) and Potsdam (women’s basketball from 1995-97). Ithaca won the ECAC Upstate tournament in 2000 and captured the Empire 8 Conference title and an NCAA championship automatic bid in 2002. St. Lawrence was Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association champions in 1997-98 and the Saints reached the quarterfinals of the NCAA tournament.

Dobbs is a member of the National Association of Basketball Coaches and the Basketball Coaches Association of New York. He played college basketball at SUNY Plattsburgh where he was a member of the team from 1989 to 1993. During his career at Plattsburgh, Dobbs was a team captain, received the Most Improved Player award and participated in the ECAC Upstate tournament.

Dobbs earned his bachelor’s degree in history from Plattsburgh and his master’s in secondary education from Potsdam.
