Texas A&M International University head men’s basketball coach Bryan Weakley announced that he will resign his position as head coach. Weakley has led the program for the past six seasons. Weakley’s resignation will take effect on April 17, 2018.
Weakley cited personal reasons for leaving his post at TAMIU but he does so with an illustrious career at the helm of the program said Director of Athletics Griz Zimmermann.
“Coach Weakley has brought success to our program, the university, community, and most importantly the lives of our Student-Athletes,” Zimmermann said.
Weakley compiled a 98-75 overall record in his seasons, including a 58-48 record in the Heartland Conference. The Ohio native compiled a 62-28 (.69%) record in the TAMIU Kinesiology and Convocation Building while leading the Dustdevils to four top five finishes in the Heartland Conference.
Over his six-year career as Head Coach, Weakley has brought Laredo a Regular Season Championship (2016-17), a Heartland Conference Tournament Championship (2013-14), and one NCAA Tournament berth (2013-14).
Zimmermann concluded, “Coach Weakley has a tradition of success and we wish him and his family the best as he moves on.”
Weakley recorded his best season in the 2013-14 season where he led the Dustdevils to a 22-9 record, finishing 13-5 in the Heartland Conference. The Dustdevils defeated UT-Permian Basin to win the 2013-14 Heartland Conference Tournament before earning the second NCAA Tournament appearance in program history.
Of his time at TAMIU, Weakley said, “Coaching at TAMIU has been one of the most transformational experiences of my life. First and foremost, I want to thank Jesus for allowing me the opportunity to work with so many exceptional people. I am grateful to my superiors who have allowed me to grow into the head coach I am today. I would like to thank Shane Rinner, Dr. Ray Keck, and Claudio Arias for hiring me in 2009. I owe a great deal to Coach Rinner for his mentorship over the last 20 years. He taught me how to build a program with integrity and toughness. Likewise, in 2012 when Dr. Keck promoted me to head coach, he gently mentored and supported me through the ups and downs of coaching and life. Thank you to those loyal faculty and staff along with Dr. Keck and Dr. Arenaz who have been some of the biggest fans, rarely missing a game and with the loudest voices in the gym. I would also like to thank my athletic director Griz Zimmermann for the incredible support he has shown me and my family. Our athletic department is more professional and organized because of his leadership and longevity as the AD. Lastly, we wouldn’t have accomplished what we did without my assistant coaches and players. We have achieved so much in a short time thanks to their efforts. The memories and relationships we created go far beyond the championships we won. I am forever indebted to this administration and community for their support over the last 9 years. My family and I are excited about this next chapter in our lives as we pursue other career opportunities. Go Dustdevils!”
