Jon Ekey was named Video Coordinator by SMU Head Coach Tim Jankovich. Ekey is entering his third season with the Mustangs after two years as a graduate manager.

Ekey played three season at Illinois State, the first two under Jankovich. He finished his collegiate career as a graduate transfer at Illinois. Ekey then played professionally for the Saitama Broncos in Japan.

“Jon was an outstanding player during his career at Illinois State and Illinois,” said Jankovich. “He has been a tremendous addition to our program as a graduate manager the past two seasons. I am excited to have him continue his career on our staff. He has a very bright basketball future.”

In his two seasons at SMU, the Mustangs are 47-21 with a 31-5 mark at Moody Coliseum. The Mustangs won the 2017 American Athletic Conference regular season and tournament titles, reaching the NCAA Tournament. The 47 total wins include five over teams ranked in the top 15 of the Associated Press Poll.

As a student-athlete at Illinois State, Ekey helped the program to two NIT appearances. In his sophomore season under Jankovich, Ekey averaged 9.0 points, 4.9 rebounds and shot 40.7 percent from 3-point range. He started 75 of 99 games in his three seasons at ISU, and was a First-Team All-Missouri Valley Scholar Athlete. As a graduate transfer at Illinois in 2013-14, he played all 35 games with 23 starts. He averaging 7.3 points and 4.8 rebounds to earn the team’s sixth-man award in his lone Big Ten campaign.

After his collegiate playing career, Ekey joined the Saitama Broncos in Japan. He was a starting forward while assisting with day-to-day operations, player development and scouting reports.

Ekey graduated from Illinois State in 2013 with a bachelor’s degree in business administration. A year later, he received a master’s degree in sport management from Illinois with a 3.65 GPA. In May of 2018, he completed a master’s degree in liberal studies at SMU.
