Matt Henry has been tabbed as assistant men’s basketball coach at UMBC, head coach Ryan Odom announced.

Henry just completed his fifth season at St. Peter’s, helping head coach John Dunne complete a tremendous revitalization of the Peacock program.

During the 2016-17 season, Henry helped guide the Peacocks to a historical run by claiming the 2017 CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament (CIT) title, the programs first-ever national postseason tournament championship. Saint Peter’s became the second MAAC team ever to win a national postseason tournament and the first team from New Jersey to win a national postseason tournament title since Princeton in the 1975 NIT. The Peacocks closed out the season winning 11 out of their last 12 games and finished the season with a 23-13 overall record, which was tied for the second most wins in a single season by a Peacock team, and a 14-6 MAAC record, the most conference wins ever in a single season by a Peacock team. The team also finished the MAAC regular season in second place, the highest finish by a Peacock team since the 1988-89 season.

Over the course of Henry’s five seasons in Jersey City, the Peacocks posted six wins in the MAAC Tournament and made three trips into the MAAC semifinals in 2015, 2017 and 2018. With Henry on staff, Saint Peter’s recorded wins against Rutgers and Seton Hall after a thrilling 83-80 overtime win against Seton Hall in 2013-14 and a 68-50 win against Rutgers in 2014-15.

Henry served as an assistant coach at Mount St. Mary’s (2010-12) for two seasons before finishing his second season as acting head coach.

Prior to his two-year stint at the Mount, Henry was the Director of Basketball Operations at Georgetown. The Hoyas went 139-62 with four appearances in the NCAA Tournament and two trips to the NIT. Georgetown participated in the 2005-06 and 2006-07 NCAA Tournaments after posting 23-10 and 30-7 records respectively. The Hoyas advanced to the Sweet 16 in 2005-06 and then the squad produced its best season and first Final Four appearance in 21 years. Georgetown returned to the NCAA Tournament in Henry’s fourth season with a 28-6 record before an NIT bid and NCAA Tournament appearance in his final two seasons in Washington, D.C.

Henry got his start in coaching as an assistant coach at Trinity University in Texas. He spent three seasons with the Tigers and helped the team to a 63-20 overall mark, a 37-9 record in conference play and to a pair of Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Tournament titles and NCAA Tournament appearances.

The Alexandria, Va. native graduated from Trinity with a degree in urban studies and political science in 2001.

Henry, and his wife, Lee, have two young sons, Will, 3, and Gus, 6 months.
