St. Mary’s (MD) men’s assistant coach takes over Seahawks women’s program

St. Mary’s College of Maryland head women’s basketball coach C.K. Calhoun has been placed on leave by the college. She has been replaced on an interim basis by current men’s assistant coach Matt Howerton.

The athletic department released the following statement to The Calvert Recorder:

“C.K. Calhoun, the head coach of St. Mary’s College of Maryland’s women’s basketball team, is on leave effective November 13. There is no further information the college can provide. Matt Howerton, assistant men’s basketball coach, will serve as interim women’s head basketball coach. Howerton brings over five years of collegiate coaching experience to the position. We look forward to cheering the team on in their games this week.”

Howerton joined the St. Mary’s men’s basketball coaching staff in 2017-18 after spending the two previous seasons at conference foe, Marymount (Va.) University. He has also worked at Indiana University of Pennsylvania and Impact Basketball Academy (FL).

Calhoun was hired as the head coach at St. Mary’s back in 2017. The Seahawks went 15-35 over her first two seasons at the helm, and are currently 0-6 this year. Calhoun has also been the head coach at Shenandoah University, and an assistant at Lafayette College, Randolph-Macon College, and Marymount University.
