Thomas Nelson Community College has named Christopher Moore as their new head men’s basketball coach. Moore comes to the College from Longwood University, where he served as director of basketball operations managing the program’s travel operations, academic monitoring, camps, scouting and film preparations. He also oversaw the program’s quality control.

His career also includes a successful run on the coaching staff at Mount St. Mary’s University where the team made an NCAA Tournament berth and netted a Northeastern Conference Championship in a recent season.

The Newport News native is the son of the late Ben Moore, whose coaching career spanned 28 years with head coaching stints at Warwick and Menchville high schools.

Moore is excited about returning home having coached at Menchville High School and on the AAU circuit. Coaching also took him to high schools in Richmond and Woodstock. Specializing in player development, he has worked with numerous Hampton Roads basketball “stars” many of whom, such as James Daniels III and Adrienne Motley, prospered in college and advanced to the pros.

Chad Smith, Thomas Nelson’s Athletics and Intramurals coordinator, said Moore will be a true asset to the College. While happy to welcome Moore, Smith said filling the head coach position is bittersweet. The program is still mourning the loss of long time head coach Armand Brown, who died in September in a traffic accident.

A tribute to Brown is scheduled for the season opener on Nov. 3 at Bethel High School where the Gators play home games. More details will be announced.
