Cardinal Stritch University and the Stritch Department of Intercollegiate Athletics has announced the hiring of Anthony Houston as the new head men’s basketball coach after spending the last four seasons as assistant coach on the Stritch staff.
Houston starts his 5th year with the Stritch Wolves program after being assistant coach for the Wolves the past four seasons. During his time as an assistant at Stritch, he helped coach the Wolves to two Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship Tournaments. Before assisting at Stritch, he was the head coach for the Bradley Tech High School boys basketball varsity team from 2013-2016. In the 2013-14, he coached the Bradley Tech Trojans to a WIAA Division 2 Regional Championship, a feat that had not been accomplished in over 25 years at the school.
Prior to head coaching Bradley Tech High School, Houston was a basketball consultant and assistant coach for multiple years at local area high schools including Marquette University High School (his alma mater), Shorewood, and Whitefish Bay Dominican High School. His duties included scouting upcoming opponents, preparing scouting reports, and conducting walk-through practices with the teams.
As a player, Houston won back-to-back State Championships at Marquette High School (1982-83 and 1983-84), an NAIA National Championship at St. Mary’s University (TX) (1989), where he was a First Team All-American, and won a world championship professionally in the CBA with the Omaha Racers (1992-93).
Houston’s basketball experience also expands to the NBA. Houston played with the San Antonio Spurs in the 1989 Rookie Revue and also played for the Cleveland Cavaliers in the NBA Summer League and pre-season in 1991.
He was the Head Video Coordinator for the Milwaukee Bucks from 2002-2005 and again from 2008-2009 for Phoenix Suns where he also was assistant coach for the Suns in the NBA summer league. His responsibilities included breaking down game film to identify individual player’s strengths and weaknesses and preparing video analysis of upcoming NBA opponents and scouting tapes. He also was responsible for pre-game workouts, and drills along with workouts of potential draft picks and free agents.
Houston is also the owner of “Houston Hoops” which is a local basketball skill development program, which provides private analysis and training of basketball skills for elementary, high school, college and NBA players.
He is in Marquette High Schools Athletic Hall of Fame and is also a member of the St. Mary’s University (TX) Athletic Hall of Fame where his jersey has been retired and hangs in the rafters.
Coach Houston and his wife Jen reside in Milwaukee with their three children.
