The Southwestern College men’s basketball program has added Myron Fisher to their staff as a character coach, head coach Matt O’Brien announced.
Fisher, who played for the Moundbuilders from 2014-2018, is currently a middle school teacher in Wichita, Kan. After graduating from Allen High School in Allen, Texas, he went on to play basketball and receive his bachelor’s degree from Southwestern. He is currently pursuing a master’s degree in School Leadership from Baker University. On the court, he finished his career with the Builders as a plus-40 percent shooter from the field and behind the three-point line. He played in 109 career games under O’Brien.
Fisher’s new position with the SC men’s basketball program is inspired by the Nation of Coaches organization. A character coach is focused on the development of young men: teaching them about not just winning and losing, but what it takes to be a leader and a man of integrity. It is a complete approach that’s proven to transform lives and take athletic performance to the next level.
“One of our goals as a program is to help our players grown on and off the court,” O’Brien said of the hire. “Part of that philosophy is building boys to men. Having a character coach helps us in the process of building a culture of young men with high character.”
On top of Fisher’s athletic accolades, he was also a model teammate during his time in Winfield. He was a three-time recipient of the champion of character award as well as a team captain for three years. He earned a spot in the NABC Honors Court and also was recognized twice as a KCAC All-Academic honoree.
“Myron is the Michael Jordan of life,” O’Brien added.
Fisher lives by his own personal mission that allows him to excel in all areas of his life. He continues to stay active through basketball, both playing and as a coach of the Truesdell boys team to go along with his volunteer work for Wichita Express.
“I will honor God by being the Son, Servant, and Student He has called me to be,” Fisher said regarding his personal mission. “Through triumph and trial, I will remain humble, inclusive, and learned, in order to challenge and encourage others to commit to being life-long learners of themselves and the world we live in.”
“Sometimes you forget that Myron is only 25 years old because he is excellence personified,” O’Brien noted. “It has been an honor to coach and mentor him his four years at SC and I am excited to have our current student-athletes learn so many powerful character lessons from Myron.”
