The University of Central Oklahoma men’s basketball team announced Tuesday Daniel Wheeler has been promoted to a full-time assistant coaching position on the staff.
Wheeler has been serving various roles for the Bronchos since 2015. He came to Central as a graduate assistant coach and was in that position for three seasons before moving to a part-time assistant coaching role for the previous two years.
“I came here last year and Daniel was already on the staff and it was no-brainer to keep him around,” UCO head men’s basketball coach Bob Hoffman said. “Daniel works so hard and does so many things that most people never know about. And he never seeks any credit. He has a sharp basketball mind and there’s no question he’ll continue to do great things for the Bronchos.”
Central has won 75 games since Wheeler joined the bench five years ago.
Wheeler came to the Bronchos after spending the previous two years as student assistant coach at MIAA foe Missouri Western.
Wheeler worked three years before that as student manager/assistant coach at Northern Oklahoma-Tonkawa, helping the Mavericks to a best-year 27-4 record and conference championship during his last season.
A native of Burden, Kan., Daniel was a four-year standout in football, basketball and baseball at Central High School.
