I have heard from multiple sources that Tufts head men’s basketball coach Bob Sheldon has retired. It sounds like he will be replaced on an interim basis by associate head coach Matt Malone.

Sheldon had spent the past 32 seasons as the Jumbos head coach, where he is the all-time leader in wins, and has compiled a 483-331 (.593) record. Last season, Sheldon led Tufts to their first-ever NESCAC conference championship, and advanced to the Sweet 16 before COVID shut down the tournament. For his efforts last year, Sheldon was named as both the NESCAC and NABC Northeast Region Coach of the Year.

Tufts has made six NCAA Tournament appearances overall under Sheldon, including four berths into the “Sweet 16.” He also captured the D3Hoops’ Northeast Region Coach of the Year in 2005-06.

Malone, a Tufts alum, is in his 14th season with the program. He has been working in the Jumbos athletic department since his graduation in 2007, and was promoted to assistant athletics director for facilities and event operations back in 2016.
