The Northwood University men’s basketball team has announced the hiring of of former NU standout Maurice Jones as an assistant coach.

He replaces Carlos McMath, who recently was named the head coach at Schoolcraft Community College.

“I am very excited to have Maurice back at Northwood as an assistant coach,” said Lonnie Griffin, who is entering his second season as a head coach.  “His knowledge of our program and his resume as a player will be a very valuable asset to the young men in this program.  I am also excited to watch his growth as he begins his journey as a coach.”

Jones was one of the top players in Northwood history, spending two seasons at point guard for the Timberwolves. He averaged 17.8 points, 6.1 assists, 4.4 rebounds and 2.2 steals per game for Northwood. Jones was First Team All-GLIAC for NU in his senior season in 2015-16 when he averaged 21.0 points, 5.7 assists and 1.9 steals per game. His scoring average that season is the highest at Northwood since 1996. Jones also set a school record for most points in a game at the Bennett Center/Riepma Arena, scoring 41 against Lake Superior State February 1, 2016. He also holds the school record for steals in a game, finishing with eight against Bellarmine November 11, 2014. In his two seasons at Northwood, Jones scored 1,016 points and ranks fifth in school history with 350 assists. His 190 assists in 2014-15 are the most in a season in school history.

After his time at Northwood, Jones spent four seasons as a player in the National Basketball League of Canada. During his time in Canada, Jones averaged 14.5 points, 6.2 assists and 2.1 steals per game.
